The Story Behind Gem Heaven Jewellery: Meet the Founder
Hello and welcome to Gem Heaven Jewellery, a brand inspired by nature, magic, and the moon. I believe every piece I create carries its own meaningful story. Today, I would like to share a personal story – my own. Have you ever wondered what inspired Gem Heaven Jewellery, or how my journey began? Read on to discover all, from inspiration to witchcraft and the experiences that have shaped both my brand
and my life...
Where it all began
Before Gem Heaven Jewellery began, I trained to work with young children and babies and spent 11 years working as a nanny, later as a photography assistant and then as a cloth nappy expert when my daughter was born. I spent my days giving talks at local birth centres and doing home demos (which I loved). Family, kindness, and bringing joy and happiness to others are important to me so these careers seemed like second nature.
It wasn’t until 2006/2007, whilst recovering from major surgery, that I took up jewellery making. What started as a pastime quickly became an obsession and I began selling my simple bead and charm designs online. However, due to being allergic to base metals, I soon took the plunge, ordered my first silver, started experimenting with wire wrapping and lampwork, took a weekend course on silver making, and I haven’t looked back since.
I soon developed a following for my unique style and built my garden studio (alongside my husband) during the 2020 National lockdown. And so, Gem Heaven Jewellery as you know her was reborn and I have loved every moment of the journey so far.
Previous Design Work: Where it all began!
Finding inspiration in nature and witchcraft
Gem Heaven Jewellery is inspired by nature, as well as moongazing and the crystals that I use in my work. Nature is my muse and I find inspiration in the shapes and colours I see around me on my daily mindful walks with Betty (my dog).
My witch practice is also very nature-based, so I often tap into myself and intuitively design from within. If I feel stuck for inspiration then I use incense to clear the energy in my studio and try again. Witchcraft is also present through the themes of my designs and I often use my intuition whilst holding certain stones to visualise what I could make out of them.
Since my mum passed, I’ve felt a bit disconnected from my witch practice and have been working with a Reiki counselor to help me reconnect and gently reawaken myself. I hope that in time, I’ll return to my daily card pulls, meditation, breathwork, and moon rituals, but for now, I am following advice and giving myself grace whilst focusing on my self-care.
I wasn’t expecting the passing of my mum to have taken such a toll on my creativity, but I am starting to find glimmers of magic here and there and leaning into a slower process whilst I allow myself this time to recover from my loss.
A story from within
Storytelling is a huge part of my work and I believe that every piece I design is created from my soul to yours, holding its own unique story to tell. While my main inspiration remains Mother Nature and the moon themselves, you may also notice that I am frequently inspired by history, myth, magic, and legends – particularly Cornish tales and folklore.
As such, I love to work intuitively and often add items to my Storyteller Collection – a mix-match charm necklace that encapsulates the idea of storytelling and lets you create a story that is truly yours.
If you follow me on Instagram then you will have seen glimpses of my new work which includes a collection of charms and statement pieces for the storyteller collection. These new pieces will be added to the website soon and I cannot wait to share them with you!
Custom Pieces
I get asked all the time when I will be bringing back custom orders and I am sorry to say that there will be a little longer to wait. I find that there is a lot more time and energy involved in custom orders as I strive for perfection and it can, at times, be difficult to match the vision that the customer is asking for.
Some of my regulars will throw random words at me and let me work intuitively on the design work – which I love. However, working with the flow of creativity that is inside me is the best way for me to work currently.
Final Words
As a final note, I would just like to once again give thanks to each and every one of you who have stood by me, especially last year. Your words of support have really kept me going and I feel so blessed to have you by my side. I am still taking it one day at a time so your patience and kindness has been invaluable to me. I love that I can spend my days creating these pieces and sharing a piece of my soul with you so THANK YOU once again for allowing me the space to do this!
