Celebrating Lammas

As the last of the summer days are dwindling and the nights are starting to draw in, we celebrate the turning of the wheel to Lammas; a season to give thanks and gratitude for the Earths great bounty. Lammas, like each Sabbat, is a time for celebration, but what does this season have in store for you?

What is Lammas?

Lammas (Lughnasadh) is a prominent point during the wheel of the year, celebrated at the start of August. While Litha marked the Summer Solstice and the celebration of light, Lammas welcomes the first harvest with abundance and prosperity. Lammas is a time where you should gather together with loved ones and give thanks for the abundance you feel all around. Take this time to honour the Earth and the Goddess for their fertility during the Beltane season and now come together to celebrate the first grain harvest.

How do I celebrate Lammas?

Traditionally, Lammas was a time for baking bread. Families would use the first harvest to stock their supplies and share with neighbours and loved ones. This tradition is still strong within the Witch community where we enjoy baking and sharing a Lammas feast with our loved ones, to discuss and celebrate the summer months, share stories and give gratitude for all that we have received.

You can create your own Lammas feast by taking your dining table outside, decorated with a beautiful centrepiece of sunflowers, apples, gold accents, orange and yellow candles and, of course, freshly baked bread and picked berries. Invite your loved ones to walk barefoot on the grass and sit under the last rays of sunlight and first shimmering stars. Share stories together, laugh, celebrate achievements and make plans for your next steps.

Lammas is also a reminder to plan for the colder months ahead. Take time to reflect on how far you have come and think about what you wish to invite in to your life and what changes need to be made to get to where you wish to be.

Another way to celebrate Lammas is to focus on your craftsmanship. Lughnasadh was named after the God, Lugh, who was a master craftsman and artist. There is an abundance of creativity in this season so use it well. Develop your skillset and use this opportunity to grow your craft.

Crystals for Lammas

There are many ways to incorporate crystals into your Lammas celebrations. Firstly, you can use crystals to meditate with and to focus your intentions. Another way to use crystals during Lammas, would be to create a crystal grid on your altar or use them in your spells and rituals.

The colours of Lammas are yellow, orange and gold so it seems appropriate that these colours are represented in our crystal picks for the Lammas season. Pick crystals which help you focus on abundance and growth. The below are a small selection of crystals I personally use during this season:

Aventurine

Use this crystal to give thanks for all that you have achieved so far this year.

Citrine

The stone of abundance. Take time to appreciate what you have received this year and attract wealth and abundance in all areas of life.

Carnelian

Carnelian is a useful tool to aid in your decision making as it helps keep you focused on the present moment.
